In Loving Memory of Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE JP
The Spirit of Pakistan Festival will forever be a lasting tribute to the vision, passion and legacy of the late Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE JP.
Waseem believed that culture had the power to bring people together. His dream was to create a festival that celebrated the identity, heritage and achievements of British Pakistanis while strengthening the bonds between all communities. He wanted every generation to feel proud of their roots, inspired by those who came before them, and empowered to shape an even brighter future.
For Waseem, Spirit of Pakistan was about far more than a celebration. It was about creating opportunities for young people, showcasing emerging talent, honouring our history, and recognising the extraordinary contributions British Pakistanis make every day in public service, business, healthcare, education, the arts, sport and community life. Above all, he believed in people. He dedicated his life to helping others succeed, often putting the needs of his community before his own. His kindness, humility and generosity touched thousands of lives, and his legacy continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In January 2026, Waseem passed away far too soon at the age of 44. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Aisha, their young sons, his wider family, countless friends, and a city that is richer because of his life and poorer because of his loss. His absence is deeply felt, but his vision lives on.
As we come together for this year’s Spirit of Pakistan Festival, we remember not only its founder, but a remarkable leader, a devoted family man, a trusted friend, a mentor to many, and a tireless champion for Birmingham. We honour his life by continuing the work he began, ensuring that this festival remains a beacon of unity, opportunity, pride and hope for generations to come.
Thank you, Waseem. Your spirit lives on in every event, every performance, every young person inspired, and every community brought together through the festival you so passionately created. You will never be forgotten.
